Coal Ash Update

Friends of Bolin Creek raised concerns which led to additional testing of the Chapel Hill Police Station coal ash dump site next to the Bolin Creek Greenway, which revealed high levels of arsenic, chromium, and other coal ash pollutants along the greenway. The NC Department of Environmental Quality subsequently rated the site High Priority and determined that “there is a release, or substantial threat of a release into the environment of a hazardous substance from the Site and an area accessible to the public.

The town has posted signs identifying the coal ash dump site along the greenway, and must now conduct more detailed studies of the extent of the contamination.  Friends of Bolin Creek, represented by the Southern Environmental Law Center, will continue to monitor the Town’s sampling and its compliance with environmental requirements, and will continue to advocate for removal of the coal ash from this unlined pit in the center of town.
